Style Stories Candy Buffet

The candy buffet is a signature of Style Social events. Many persons that attend our events look forward to this with great excitement. Eyes widened as our guests walked into the party room at “The Christmas List” and saw the vast display of delicious treats available for their indulgence. We were especially excited to unveil the "All Night Disco Party" candy buffet as it included some of our own favorite candies that carried the sweet taste of memories from our childhood. We searched everywhere to find sugar daddies, tootsie rolls in every flavor, cry babies, red hots, ring pops, fun dip, blow plops of all kind, now and later, laffy taffy, smarties, rock candy, chick o sticks and more. The cigarette candy and cigar gum were a hit as everyone reminisced on the days they would sneak to buy these forbidden treats. It was simply a fun gesture that brought out the playfulness and humor of childlike fantasy. Everyone filled up their ‘brown paper bags’ to overflow and were more than satisfied. We are always so humored at the way our buffets are cleaned out by the end of the night in a room filled with adults. It is such a joy when we can all just “Have some candy.”

New photos from All Night Disco Party

It was so great to see everyone in full 70's and 80's flair! From the women whose funky styles ranged from rocker chic and hippie to dancing queens and disco divas. The macho men moved with all the cool confidence of John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever, grooved like the Commodores with soul like Barry White. It was definitely a Boogie Wonderland! And Boogie Nights are always the best in town! Please check out the latest photos in the post "All Night Disco Party" from Tuesday March 4th, 2014.

Style Stories SWAG!

Parachute men, jacks, paddle ball, shutter shades, beaded necklaces and glow sticks were some of the amazing SWAG that our guests enjoyed at the "All Night Disco Party." It was so much fun listening to people reflect on the last time they played jacks or saw parachute men, watching them dance with their glow sticks, create necklaces and pose for pictures in I love the 70's or 80's  life-zized polaroid frames and shutter shades. Beaded necklaces were carefully chosen to compliment outfits while other items were packed away in bags to share with loved ones. Everyone enjoyed this wonderful opportunity to "Dress up",reminisce on childhood games and simply "Play again."

Tom Ford's 1970's inspiration

Designer Tom Ford is greatly influenced by the beauty and glamour of the 1970's. Ford insists in an interview in Harper's Bazaar in December 2010, "I think the 1970's will always be the decade for me. Obviously, I grew up in that era, but the beauty standard was touchable, kissable." In an interview with Dallas News, Ford is quoted as saying, "the aesthetics of American cinema during that time has influenced me greatly. There was this slick, minimal glamour that I find timeless." In celebration of the incredible beauty and style of the decade, one of the amazing giveaways at Style Stories' "All Night Disco Party" was a pair of Tom Ford signature sunglasses.

All Night Disco Party

All Night Disco Party
All night disco party! Remember the days when you went to the disco with friends, cousins, neighbors. You danced all night to the rhythms of Kool and the gang, the Begees, Sister Sledge, Earth Wind and Fire. In your belt bottom pants, blue jeans, mini skirts, afro and platform shoes. You danced all through the seventies right on into the eighties to Michael Jackson, Prince, MC Hammer, Madonna, Duran Duran, Sugar Hill Gang and Cyndi Lauper. People imitated artists' style, everything from stacked bracelets and gold bangles, off the shoulder shirts and leggings. Guys you were comfortable in colors, warm up suits and heirloom pants. You came out of all the gravity of the 60’s where men spent a decade getting to the moon. But when that moon man landed in the 1980’s, the flag of MTV was hoisted and waved proudly when video killed the radio star. You were encouraged to wear your sunglasses at night and declare boldly, "I want my MTV!" Fashion was fun, the styles were versatile, the haircuts, the colors, the uniqueness, the glamour.

Dance was a must, even if you were dancing with yourself. You had nothing to lose and nothing to prove. There was freedom. It seemed nothing was out of the ordinary but everything extraordinary. Music, the heartbeat of these decades. Musicians were in the movies, and actors in music. All genres flourished.. Music was your own heartbeat. It was in your mind and in your car. In your homes, you gathered around to watch Michael Jackson’s Thriller, Kung Foo at the drive-in and Grease at the Shirley Street Theater. Somehow you knew every single word. Snapping your fingers was still cool. The songs a storybook, a photo album, for everything you enjoyed and experienced. Defining relationships, crossing cultural, racial, and gender boundaries. Empowering, uniting.

This is why Style social hosted the All Night Disco Party. This night was for you. Tailored particularly to your experiences. Your story. Your history. Recalling your past, your song because you know that it’s impossible to separate the music from your memories. You came alive again when you heard it. Everything you’ve experienced was in every line and you sang it from your own hearts. The songs you love, the people you love, all the things that are meaningful to you. From the time we introduced this event, old friends, family, and classmates began calling each other, recalling the times they spent, visiting old neighborhoods. They’ve been laughing, talking and reminiscing about the joys of youth, sorrows, heartbreaks, laughter, relationships, places they used to go, people they would see, the songs they loved. We realized it has been an opportunity to return not only to the music, but the people that made it memorable. It has kindled this re-connection we did not anticipate, this buzzing everywhere with excitement. People are expressing how much they needed this and, in the midst of the stresses of everyday life, they got an opportunity to return to an era where it was all about the good times. We saw this beautiful picture being painted, lives woven together, rekindled friendships. We saw this coming together, this gathering, and the bridging of generations. Families dancing together, trying styles.

Somewhere amidst the texts of 70’s and 80’s song lyrics, the phone calls, the emails of outfits being bought and made, the constant singing, we have seen so clearly the heart of it all. Our vision was to fill a room with all that joy, and memory, and passion and music. The music once again bringing people together, resonating with the heartbeat of Style Social, returning to this simplicity, getting dressed up to do the things you enjoy with the people you enjoy. To play again, laugh again, dance freely, have some candy, lick the spoon. This is the sound we longed to hear, the beat we longed to dance to. All night long, all night…

The Christmas List

Twas truly the season! The Christmas List was Style Social’s first official event. The perfect season to launch what promises to be a perpetual holiday, to preserve at all times those things we treasure most at Christmas, freedom, friends, family, food, shopping, dancing and discounts, all in the joy of Jesus. We sought to create an environment where people could relax in a stress free atmosphere, step away from all the hustle and bustle and traffic, and enjoy the wonderful treats  while shopping for last minute things on their Christmas list. We wanted to bring the fun back into Christmas shopping, without the pressures of expense, alongside loved ones, reuniting, reconnecting. This was our gift to you, all wrapped up in a big red bow.

Two rooms in the Hilton were transformed into a retail and party room. The holiday music was lightening the loads of our hearts in the retail room, lit up and dressed with garlands, a little Christmas tree, and all the elegance of the season. While across the hall the dimly lit dance room set with candy buffet and cocktail tables, provided the perfect ambiance for treats, dancing and laughter. Guests were entertained by our hosts Anthia and Judy who kept the room blazing with excitement, raffles, and giveaways. Luxury soaps, bed bath and body works, and freshwater pearls delighted the hearts of our unsuspecting winners. People bought gifts, men for their wives, daughters for their mothers, friends and coworkers for each other. Women excitedly accessorized their outfits for Christmas Sunday.
We were delighted to see so many smiling faces, that were indeed the best feature of the night.

As families came together, young and old, babies having their first taste of candy and adults no less wide eyed at our beautiful signature candy buffet. It was truly a wonder to behold! And we are still wondering who ate the little ginger bread houses. And how it was that we were left with bottles of wine and cider yet very little candy. Nevertheless we were amazed how before our eyes every face was lightened beyond that of a thousand Christmas trees, radiating with the simple joy and pleasure of being in the company of old friends and family. And they did dance! Doing the electric slide while celebrating the good times in a boogie wonderland. As we gave them a taste of our upcoming event with music from the 70’s and 80’s.

Remember When

Remember when things were simple? You miss those days when simple things were enough. Our greatest expectations were for simple joys. Days spent with family, old friends, and surrounding neighbors who you knew by name. The people we tell our children stories of amidst uncontrollable laughter.  When there wasn’t a constant striving after things even when they seemed to lack. You learned to make the most out of what was there. Homes and hearts were open. There was a strong sense of community. Play and leisure was important in establishing these bonds. Wouldn’t it delight you to revisit this time, to simply play again, laugh again, have some candy, lick the spoon? We exist to create opportunities for you to reconnect with those simple pleasures of your early years, those things and people that made your life enjoyable and hard times bearable. We want to restore a sense of community, the days where friends were treated like family and people simply enjoyed one another, laughing and sharing stories.

Each event is designed with the intent of giving value to the precious things that we rarely take the time to consider. The things that helped to nurture your relationships from childhood, things you lovingly recall when you get together, the songs you sang, the games you played, the foods and sweets you enjoyed.  Events that may serve to let your hair down during a stressful time, healing during a time of hurt or disappointment or a much needed reconnection with treasured friends, family or people of shared interest. These are events that will allow you to reflect on your past, reunite with the people who shared your greatest memories and create an opportunity to connect with those who may shape your tomorrow.
